Budapest - Facts and figures

Population: 1,886,000, that is 19% of the total population
Administration: Divided into 23 districts (the Roman numerals in addresses refer to the district).
Language: The Hungarian language belongs to the Finno-Ugric family. However, we cannot understand the speech of our European "relatives" the Finns and Estonians. Unlike other European languages, the family name precedes the given name. Service providers generally speak German and/or English, hotel staff members understand several languages, and so communication won't be a problem. Should you lose your way in town, do not hesitate to ask for help. Young people study one or two languages at school.
Money: Legal tender: forint (Ft, HUF). All the major credit cards are accepted in Hungary in places displaying the emblem at the entrance. You may well bump into illegal money changers who seem to offer very favourable rates.

1 EUR = 254.53 HUF
1 PLN = 66.77 HUF
1 SEK = 26.94 HUF
1 HUF = 136.58 ROL
1 NLG = 115.32 HUF

How to get to Budapest?

By plane

Hungary's international airport is easy to reach from any point on the globe. Budapest Ferihegy airport has two terminals roughly 28 kilometres from the city - Hungarian Airlines MALéV flights use Ferihegy Terminal 2A, with all other airlines flying into and departing from Terminal 2B. Terminal 1 is dedicated exclusively to freight transport. The Air Traffic and Airport Authority (LRI) operates Centrum buses between the city (Erzsébet tér) and the terminals. They depart every 30 minutes from 5.30 to 21.00. Journey time is 45 minutes. Airport Minibuses, run by LRI as well, are a kind of collective taxi at a reasonable price, which travel between any requested destination in town and the terminals. On arrival, you should go to the Airport Minibus Counter, and you can already book your return trip over the phone.

By car

In terms of documents, you only need a valid driving licence, registration document and a country sticker to enter Hungary.
International traffic rules generally apply in Hungary. Drink-driving is strictly prohibited i.e. the alcohol level in your blood may not exceed 0.0 per thousand. (it's not a joke!)

Budapest has three large international railway stations: Eastern (Keleti), Western (Nyugati) and Southern (Déli).
The following international rail passes are valid in Hungary: INTER RAIL, BIJ, EURO DOMINO, RES, CITY-STAR. Passengers from non-European countries may use EURAILPASS, EURAIL FLEXI PASS and EURAIL TICKET. Taking an Intercity train is the fastest way to get to major rural towns from Budapest.

Taxi

Budapest taxis have yellow numberplates and yellow taxi signs on them. You can also call a taxi by phone: the car will usually get there in 5-10 minutes. Switchboard operators generally speak English. Check the fare beforehand and see to it that the driver turns on the clock when starting off. Transit from Ferihegy Airport to the city is always very expensive, so we recommend the Airport Shuttle (Minibus) to reach town. The best idea is to call a taxi by phone, as major cab operators charge lower fees up-front than taxi cars hailed off the street. Taxi companies use different tariffs, but there is one thing which they have in common: a price ceiling is applied.
The cost of the minibus is 2100 HUF per person per travel. So if you arrive 3 with the same plane, it's better to call a taxi (call +36 1 2000000), because it'll cost you 3500 HUF (for one taxi) so like this it's cheaper for one person.
